The Nursery is one of the great masterpieces of all musical literature inspired by
childhood (although it is not the only one). To give an idea of the importance of
this piece, suffice it to quote what the French composer C. Debussy says about it:
“Nobody has spoken to that which is best in us with such tenderness and depth [as
Mussorgsky]. Never before has such a refined sensibility expressed itself with such simple
means [without] stultifying rules or artificialities.”
