Nationalism was a powerful ideological force among the smaller ethnic and linguistic groups constituting central Europe, especially from 1850 onwards. Some eight million Czechs lived in the territories of Bohemia and Moravia, which were part of the multi-ethnic and expanding Habsburg empire, and which now constitute the Czech Republic. B. Smetana, A. Dvořák, L. Janáček and J. Suk are the composers who contributed most to the birth of the country's national music. All of them had, in any case, a strong relationship with German music, a tradition that at the time was considered the West universal music.
