Music and National Identity

This concert will present works by P. Vladigerov and G. Enescu, two great composers from Romania and Bulgaria. Pancho Vladigerov (1899-1978) is considered one of the most important Bulgarian composers of all times and was one of the first to successfully combine Bulgarian folk music and classical music. He is part of the so-called second generation of Bulgarian composers and was one of the founding members of the Bulgarian Society for Contemporary Music. George Enescu (1881-1955) is considered Romania's most important composer. His music is inspired by the traditions of his country. His two Romanian rhapsodies and his Sonata n. 3 are known to have a typical Romanian folk style.
